Baptism is the first of the Seven Sacraments and the "door" which gives access to the other sacraments. Baptism is the first and chief sacrament of forgiveness of sins because it unites us with Christ, who died for our sins and rose for our justification. Baptism, Holy Eucharist or Communion, and Confirmation constitute the "Sacraments of Initiation" by which a believer receives the remission of original and personal sin, begins a new life in Christ and the Holy Spirit, and is incorporated into the Church, the Body of Christ.
The rite of Baptism consists of Holy Water poured on the head of the recipient followed by anointing with Holy Chrism while pronouncing the invocation of the Most Holy Trinity: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. As part of the rite, the person (or if an infant, his or her Sponsor) is asked specific questions about their beliefs, their Faith, and their willingness to live life according to the teachings of Jesus Christ.
Infant baptism is conferred by appointment typically on the 4th Sunday of the Month (except during Advent or Lent) and normally takes place within the Celebration of Mass. The parents of the infant are required to attend a pre-baptismal class. To prepare for the Sacrament of Baptism, parents are requested to call the Parish Office at (732)-329-2893 to schedule the pre-baptismal class and the date for baptism. It is strongly suggested to make the initial contact several weeks or even months before the preferred date if possible. Parents also need to prayerfully identify the godparents for their baby who will answer the questions and state the intentions on behalf of the baptised.
A Sponsor for Baptism or Confirmation
The opportunity to walk with another person in faith, whether a child or an adult, is an awesome privilege. It is cause for serious consideration on the part of those who ask another to witness with their lives to what it means to be a Catholic, and for those who accept this responsibility. It is important to think carefully about your selection and decision.
The person to be considered a Sponsor must be at least 14 years of age and have themselves completed the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation), and are leading a life in harmony with the Faith and Tradition to which they are called to witness. A Godparent/Sponsor cannot be the mother or father of the one to be baptized. If married, their marriage must be recognized as “valid” by the Catholic Church. They must be attending Mass regularly, that is, on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation.
They will need to obtain a Certificate of Eligibility signed by their pastor. Being properly registered at one’s parish is an important first step. Consider carefully your invitation and response. There is more involved to this than simply standing at the Baptismal Font. It is a lifelong commitment. If you have questions, speak with the pastor who can offer you guidance.
Adults who wish to receive the Sacraments of Initiation are asked to contact the Parish Office at (732)-329-2893 and discuss with the staff the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA).
